Beleaguered Twente not expected to play professionally next season

The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) does not expect Eredivisie side Twente to be playing professional football next season.

Twente were banned from European competition for three years by the KNVB back in December after the club was found guilty of  deliberately misleading the organisation in regard to its relationship with Malta-based investment firm Doyen Sports.

An independent investigation into the club s management structure has recommended most of the board stand down, adding that there is an unhealthy culture at Twente who won the league title in 2009-10.

Speaking following the publication of the report, the KNVB s director of professional football Bert van Oostveen told NOS: The probability that FC Twente will not play professional football n…

Everton switch helped me adjust after Euros – Williams

Ashley Williams has admitted his first transfer in eight years felt strange but said the timing of his move to Everton helped him adjust to life after Wales run to the semi-finals of Euro 2016.

The 32-year-old played more than 300 games for Swansea City after joining the club from Stockport County in 2008, and his performances over several seasons earned him a £12million transfer to Goodison Park.

Williams played in all six of Wales matches in France and he said that adapting to life at a new club was a welcome distraction from the highs and lows of international football.

He told the Daily Star: There was that massive high and then you come back and have to slip back into normal life.

I went on holiday after the Euros, went in for a few days at Swans…

Messi return to Barcelona possible next year, says Romeu

Barcelona s economic vice president Eduard Romeu has insisted the club can afford to bring Lionel Messi back to Camp Nou next year.

The 35-year-old sees his contract with Paris Saint-Germain conclude at the end of the season and will reportedly decide his future after the World Cup in Qatar.

Should Messi become available on a free transfer, a host of clubs would likely be attributed with an interest in the Argentina international, and Romeu has made it clear Barca could afford a deal.

As it would be on a free, surely it is something that we can do. But it d be a technical decision, anyways, he told Mundo Deportivo.

While Messi would not require a transfer fee if his deal with PSG reaches its conclusion, significant funds would be required on his wages.

Real Madrid must win LaLiga and end Barca dominance – Roberto Carlos

Real Madrid great Roberto Carlos believes the club s main focus this season should be to end their Liga drought ahead of Saturday s Clasico showdown with Barcelona.

Madrid have emerged as Europe s dominant force in recent seasons, winning the Champions League twice in the past three years, each time at the expense of Atletico Madrid, but have won the domestic title just once since 2008.

In the meantime, arch rivals and two-time defending champions Barca have gained a stranglehold in Spain, claiming three of the last four LaLiga trophies.

Madrid s LaLiga record remains formidable – they have finished outside the top two positions just once in the last 12 seasons and they head to Camp Nou top of the table and six points ahead of Barca.

Spezia 1-3 Inter: Champions return to summit to pile pressure on Milan

Inter moved back to the summit of Serie A in the latest turn of an enthralling title race after they claimed a 3-1 win over Spezia.

The Nerazzurri threw down a gauntlet to rivals Milan as they deposed them at the top of the table thanks to goals from Marcelo Brozovic, Lautaro Martinez and Alexis Sanchez.

Simone Inzaghi s defending champions could well end the weekend back in second place, with their San Siro neighbours set to face Genoa later on Good Friday.

But victory at Stadio Alberto Picco at least means the Nerazzurri remain neck-and-neck, with a game in hand on the Rossoneri beyond this latest round ensuring destiny stays in their own hands.

Spezia 2-0 Milan: Maggiore and Bastoni stun Serie A leaders

Spezia registered their first ever win over Serie A leaders Milan as Giulio Maggiore and Simone Bastoni sealed a famous 2-0 triumph at Stadio Alberto Picco on Saturday.

Milan fell behind 11 minutes into the second half when captain Maggiore opened his league account for the season from close range before Bastoni added a sumptuous second after 67 minutes.

Stefano Pioli s side failed to register a single attempt on target in a league game for the first time since August 2019 as they slipped to their first Serie A away defeat in 14 months

The result means Inter – who Milan face next weekend – can leapfrog their rivals at the league summit if they overcome Lazio on Sunday.

Late Kai Havertz goal sees Arsenal beat Brentford to reach Premier League summit

Kai Havertz climbed off the bench to fire Arsenal to the top of the Premier League with a late winner to sink Brentford 1-0.

Manchester City’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool at lunchtime left the door open for the Gunners to hit the summit for the first time since May 2.

They did not look like doing so for 89 minutes against a stubborn Brentford side, and at times were grateful the hosts did not punish some rudimentary errors from goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

But 10 minutes after coming off the bench, Havertz struck at the far post to convert Bukayo Saka’s cross and lift Arsenal back to the top for the first time since last season’s title bid fizzled out.

Sommer return boosts Switzerland´s World Cup squad

Yann Sommer s return from injury provided a boost for Switzerland as they announced their 26-man squad for the FIFA World Cup.

The Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper, who suffered an ankle injury in a DFB-Pokal defeat to Darmstadt three weeks ago, is one of four goalkeepers named in Murat Yakin’s squad, with concerns over the fitness of Sommer and Jonas Omlin.

Switzerland have named an experienced squad and will be hoping to build on their impressive performance at Euro 2020, which saw them defeat then-reigning champions France before losing on penalties to Spain in the quarter-finals.

Manchester City s Manuel Akanji and Newcastle United stalwart Fabian Schar make up an experienced centre-back combination, with Fulham’s right-back Kevin Mbabu a surprise abse…

Prediction: Celtic vs Lazio

Best odds: 1/1

Bookmaker:

Celtic are set to welcome Lazio to the Celtic Park in Glasgow for what will be the third round in a very interesting Group E of this season s Europa League. Meanwhile, CFR Cluj will be playing against Rennes in France.

Celtic

Celtic have been the undisputed rulers of Scottish football for seven years now, ever since they snatched the title away from arch-rivals Rangers in 2012. They re keeping the tradition going at the moment as they sit on top of the table, but Rangers are now hot on their heels once more, with the same number of points (22 from nine games) and even the same goal-difference. With Steven Gerrard putting together a formidable side at the Ibrox, Celtic will have a really tough battle on their hands to retain the title.<…

Drinkwater to return to Chelsea after just two Burnley appearances

Danny Drinkwater will return to Chelsea this month after making just two appearances for Burnley since joining on loan.

Clarets boss Sean Dyche confirmed at a news conference on Friday that the midfielder would be heading back to Stamford Bridge.

Drinkwater played just once in the Premier League for Burnley, in the 4-1 home defeat to Manchester City on December 3, having also started the shock 3-1 home loss to Sunderland in the EFL Cup in August.

The 29-year-old said it was time to get my career back on track when he signed a deal with Burnley that expires on January 6.

It was a bit of a complicated time at Chelsea, but I see this as a positive move and I m looking forward to getting going, he said.

However, Drinkwater struggled to break into Dyc…
